Why do Muslims fast in Ramadan?

According to the Muslim Council of Britain, the main purpose is to work towards “taqwa” or to draw closer to God and to “create feelings of gratitude, self-discipline and self-improvement in both individuals and communities Level. ” For individuals, fasting is said to encourage relationships with people around the world who have little or no food.

At a community level, a quick meal (iftar) break at sunset encourages families and the local community to share their food.
